Marsh Creek Site 2

Urban Ecology

Overview

To gauge the health of the site, students paid close attention to the trees and organisms within the stream. Using the guidelines United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) set in the Community Tree Risk Evaluation Form, students picked out ten trees and assessed their health. The trees in this site relatively easy to get to. The vegetation consisted of medium-large trees and shrubs. Click here for more on the method of picking these trees and completing the form.

Data Collected

The data indicates the need to prevent further erosion as this is the number one concern to the tree's health. Each tree that was located along the banks showed signs of erosion from mild to prevalent. Trees that were in the site area, but not directly on the banks, had a better risk rating because their roots were not exposed.

Visual- Biological Factors

A stream usually hosts many animals such as fish and amphibians that indicate the streams' health. In this case, the stream was mostly empty of any life. Insects were most common, and only a few fish were seen rarely. This may be due to the pollution such as the filmy coating on the bottom of the stream and/or the water's condition. The chemical and physical tests presented a low dissolved oxygen and low conductivity. The results of all tests done on this site can be viewed here.
